Surface Water in Massachusetts Basements

Surface Water in Massachusetts Basements

In Massachusetts, it is a fact that water will find its way into most basements over time. It is also a fact that ground water is the primary culprit in basement water seepage problems. However, surface water can be a significant contributing factor as well. To avoid having surface water add to your wet basement problems, you must make sure that it drains away from your home. Water should never be allowed to “pond” on the ground near the basement’s foundation. To prevent this ponding, the ground around your home must be angled away from the structure. By angling (commonly known as “grade” or “pitch”) you will allow gravity to work its magic, and the water will drain into the storm water management system as it is supposed to do. In addition the gutters and downspouts on your home must be properly sized, installed, and kept clear of debris and in good repair. By making sure that the ground around your home is graded properly and that your gutters and downspouts are functioning well, you will prevent surface water from causing seepage in your basement and added strain on your sump pump. Remember that the ground water level is something that you cannot control while surface water is something that is fairly easy to control. New England Dry Basements can install french drains in your yard to control your basement water seepage problems.
